Impact of the secret millionaire

Beauty industry magnate Rob Calcraft said that the time he spent in Barrow-In-Furness was an eye opener to say the least.

The problem as far as we can tell is that the programme largely ignored the fact that hundreds of engineering jobs in Barrow-In-Furness are perfectly secure and we have, in the South Lakes, more mechanical and electrical engineering vacancies than many other parts of the country.

BAE systems and other defense companies have engineering and accountancy vacancies in Barrow and also jobs in oil and gas, are at the fore of the region’s economy. The guy “terry” that Mr. Calcraft gave the money to worked in the shipyard for many years and this is still one of Barrow’s biggest employers.

The programme also focused almost exclusively on Barrow island which is separate to Barrow-In-Furness, there are many jobs in Barrow including NHS jobs in Barrow and other public sector vacancies. The hospital has a couple of accountancy vacancies in Barrow-In-Furness right now paying up to £35,000, but the programme showed none of this at all.
The thought that no one knew he was a secret millionaire is just unbelievable – can you imagine someone in Versace jeans and handmade shoes, wearing a cravat wandering merrily around barrow island with a camera crew? Yeah right – after  a day working in one of a defense jobs in Barrow-In-Furness you come home to see him – not suspicious at all…
